What I know now

November 18, 2015

When deciding I wanted to become a teacher I knew right away I had no idea what I was getting in to. After observing a classroom I feel like I am headed onto the right path for what I want to do. I know now that school's are diverse. Not just diverse culture wise, but diverse because of the abilities and disabilities different student's may possess. I know now that student's don't always listen, and that they need to be reminded to focus on what is being taught. I also know now that I am capable of becoming a teacher and that I will be the best teacher that I can be. What I know now will stick with me for the rest of my career.

One thing that will stay with me

November 25, 2015

When looking at my experience in the classroom I instantly think of all the wonderful tips I recieved from my field assignment teacher. "The children need to be reminded to do..." "Teach them rhymes that will get stuck in their head so they remember..." "Communication is key" etc. However, the one thing that will stay with me is that "routine is a must". Being in the classroom for 8 afternoons showed me that these children have a very strict routine, intentional or not. This routine, however, keeps them going. They know when they should be quiet, when they should be playing table top games, or even when they should be getting ready for recess. Without routine it would throw the student's off and create confusion. So, when I have my very own classroom one day I will remember that the children need to have some sort of routine that doesn't change because it worked wonders for this classroom.

My overall experience in the field

Being in the field was such a wonderful experience. Each time I went to the classroom I gained much more knowledge than what I went in with. Overall, my time in the field was absolutely amazing. The children were friendly, the staff were welcoming, and the community was very warm and connected to the school. Being in a kindergarten class was difficult because most days the students' would just color or play games, but I still learned a lot about each student and how kindergarten works. I hope that everyone has a chance to be with a grade level such as kindergarten just so they can understand where the child's basic education begins.
